Hi there.
Fridays this month are dedicated to the economy, but I want to take a moment to recognize that tomorrow is Juneteenth, the anniversary of the end of chattel slavery in the United States.
There isn’t a nation on this planet lacking a history of oppression and human rights violations. Chattel slavery is certainly not the only American sin, but it’s by far the most egregious. We owe it to ourselves and to society to reflect on this for two reasons: to remember that for all of our flaws, we’ve come a long way toward a just society; and to remember that it’s all too easy for societies to find ways to justify repulsive actions and policies.
May we never forget.
Now, on to the economy. One thing is for sure: we’re at a strange point in American economic development, and anyone who tells you they understand exactly what’s going on is a liar. But these readings should offer something of a baseline to help you form your own opinions about near-term and longer-term economic outlook.
